JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Traffic engineering is the key to maintaining smooth traffic flow during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming and return, amid a surge in vehicle volumes that set a record high. Various schemes such as contraflow and one-way systems were massively implemented by the National Police Traffic Corps to ease congestion at critical points. A total of 285 interventions or traffic engineering measures were carried out by the police during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming and return period. Head of the National Police Traffic Corps, Inspector General of Police Agus Suryonugroho, stated that this year’s homecoming traffic recorded the highest figures ever, yet it could still be controlled thanks to the appropriate traffic management strategy. “The highest homecoming traffic in history to date, with one day seeing 270,315 vehicles leaving Jakarta—this is the highest and most numerous peak homecoming flow in history and has been well managed,” said Agus in a written statement (1/4/2026). “Last year 250,000 vehicles, this year 270,000 for the homecoming flow. The peak flow last year was 223,000 vehicles, this year 256,000 vehicles, and this is extraordinary,” he added. This vehicle surge was clearly evident from the movement data during the period from 13 to 29 March 2026. Outbound traffic from Jakarta reached 3,255,002 vehicles, an increase of 18.43% from normal conditions. Meanwhile, inbound traffic to Jakarta was recorded at 2,989,931 vehicles, up 10.79%.
