Police Identify Two Suspects in Attempted Kidnapping of 70-Year-Old Man in PIK
An elderly man with the initials GH (70) narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt while exercising in the morning in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area, Penjaringan, North Jakarta. Two suspected perpetrators have been identified. “Two suspected perpetrators have been identified,” said the Criminal Investigation Unit Head of the Penjaringan Metro Police, AKP Sampson Sosa Hutapea, when contacted by reporters on Sunday (14/6/2026). The incident occurred in May 2026, at around 6.55 a.m. Western Indonesian Time. The event was recorded by CCTV cameras and went viral on social media. In the circulating CCTV footage, a car is seen following the victim, who was doing his morning exercise near his home. Police investigated the case. The victim managed to fight back, thwarting the perpetrators’ attempt to force him into the car. “The Penjaringan Metro Police received a police report regarding an alleged attempted kidnapping and/or assault that occurred in the Pantai Indah Kapuk area,” said AKP Sampson Sosa Hutapea, as reported by Antara on Friday (12/6). The perpetrators’ actions were recorded by CCTV cameras near the scene. Police received a report concerning the alleged attempted kidnapping and/or assault of the victim. Based on the initial investigation and CCTV footage obtained by investigators, a car was seen following the victim, who was walking for exercise around his residential area. Shortly after, a man got out of the vehicle and directly approached the victim. The perpetrator tried to force the victim into the car. The victim resisted, saving himself from the kidnapping attempt. “The perpetrator tried to pull the victim to force him into the car. The victim fought back, so the perpetrator failed to carry out the kidnapping,” explained Sampson. In the CCTV footage, the victim and the perpetrator were seen grappling. Both even appeared to fall onto the road during the struggle. Despite his advanced age, the victim continued to resist and shouted for help. The victim’s shouts allegedly panicked the perpetrator. The perpetrator eventually stopped his actions and chose to flee the scene before successfully taking the victim. “The victim and the perpetrator struggled until they fell. Because the victim fought back and shouted, the perpetrator appeared frightened and then left the location,” said Sampson. The victim is a private sector employee and has never had any problems with other parties. Police stated the victim did not know the perpetrators.
