Police foil smuggling of used cars
BATAM, Riau: The Batam Police foiled an attempt to smuggle
dozens of luxury used cars from Singapore into the city of Batam,
Riau, through a private port belonging to PT DSFU in Tanjung
Uncang.
Batam Police said on Friday that importers and smugglers of
the used cars, now being held by the Barelang municipal police,
had not yet been found.
Batam Mayor Nyat Kadir imposed a ban on the entry of used cars
from other countries into Batam in April 2002 in a bid to control
the city's traffic problems, but delinquent importers seem to
have ignored the ruling.
Earlier, the Batam customs authorities seized around 150 used
sedans of different makes originating from Singapore. --Antara
