Police foil illegal shipment of timber

JAKARTA: Police said on Sunday that they had managed to foil an illegal shipment of timber worth Rp 500 million in the Thousand Islands waters off north Jakarta late last week.

TheDanau Hidayah II, which had been transporting the 650-cubic-meters worth of timber from Central Kalimantan toward Banten province, did not have the required documents, including the document of legal forest yield (SKSHH).

"We seized the boat along with the timber and arrested the boat's captain," said chief of city police for the water and air division, Adj. Sr. Comr. Haris Kabilah.

The shipment of illegal timber, Haris said, violated Law No. 41, 1999 on forestry article 78, which carries a maximum fine of Rp 10 billion and maximum imprisonment of five years. --JP.
