Police Escalate Coal Corruption Case Worth Rp 5 Trillion to Investigation

The Corruption Eradication Corps (Kortas Tipikor) of the Indonesian National Police has elevated the status of a corruption case concerning the supply of coal to several power plants (PLTU) to the investigation stage. Investigators have gathered sufficient evidence to advance the case from the preliminary inquiry phase.

The case was formally upgraded to an investigation earlier this month, registered under case number SP.Sidik/63/VII/RES.3.1./2026/Kortastipidkor, dated 4 July 2026.

“Based on the results of a comprehensive inquiry, including document collection, requests for information, and an initial analysis of the evidence, the Kortas Tipikor Polri has elevated the handling status of this case to the investigation stage on 4 July 2026,” said Head of the Kortas Tipikor Polri, Inspector General Totok Suharyanto, during a press conference at the National Police Headquarters on Monday (6/7/2026).

Totok stated that two companies are suspected of being involved in the case. They are alleged to have committed irregularities related to the fulfilment of coal supplies to several power plants since 2018.

“At the very least, investigators have found alleged irregularities in the procurement and fulfilment of coal supplies to the PLTU by several involved companies, namely PT OBP and PT BRA,” Totok said.

According to Totok, more than a dozen witnesses have been questioned by the Kortas Tipikor Polri. Investigators have also analysed a number of documents to shed light on the case.

“Sixteen have been questioned so far. Initially, we issued summonses for thirty-four, but only sixteen have been able to be clarified,” Totok explained.

“Secondly, we have also analysed several documents, which led us to uncover the criminal act of corruption, hence we elevated this to the investigation process,” he continued.

This coal corruption case has caused losses of up to Rp 5 trillion. Totok noted that this calculation is not final, as his team is still coordinating with the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) of the Republic of Indonesia.

“Because this has just been elevated from inquiry to investigation, we will certainly convey the final figure after the BPK issues its investigative audit,” Totok concluded.
