JAKARTA - The practice of carrying passengers in the open bed of trucks or pickups remains common, especially during Eid travel and holiday periods. Despite repeated warnings, this habit persists as a recurring tradition in various regions.

Head of Operations at the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate, Commissioner Robby Hefados, emphasised that using open-bed vehicles to transport people clearly violates prevailing traffic rules.

He explained that, beyond the legal breach, this practice carries high safety risks for passengers. The lack of adequate protection leaves those in the open bed highly susceptible to injuries, particularly during sudden braking or accidents.

According to Robby, the police will prioritise a humane approach in addressing such violations. Officers in the field will provide advisories to drivers to stop using open-bed vehicles for carrying people.

“The police will certainly issue warnings to open-bed vehicles used for transporting people, particularly advising them not to enter toll roads,” he said.

He also acknowledged that this habit is deeply ingrained in society, especially during Eid when many people travel with extended families. Nevertheless, tradition cannot be used as an excuse to neglect safety.

“This is indeed a tradition in our society during Eid visits, but it is very dangerous. Therefore, the police will provide humane advisories to drivers and passengers not to use such vehicles for carrying people,” said Robby.

This measure is expected to enhance public awareness and encourage prioritising safety in journeys.
