Police Detain 60-Year-Old Grandfather for Allegedly Abusing 32 Students in Makassar

Police have detained a 60-year-old grandfather in Makassar, South Sulawesi, following a report alleging the molestation of 32 primary school pupils.

“Yes, the perpetrator has been detained,” said the head of the Women and Children Protection Unit at Makassar Metropolitan Police, First Inspector Arianto, speaking to CNNIndonesia.com on Monday (20/7).

Nevertheless, Arianto said investigators had yet to determine when the suspect, the owner of a food stall near one of the primary schools, began committing his alleged acts, as questioning was still ongoing.

“We have not yet questioned everyone,” he said.

The case was uncovered by the Makassar City Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Agency (DPPA), beginning with an initial report that three pupils were suspected to have fallen victim to molestation allegedly carried out by the suspect in June.

“Initially there were only three pupils suspected of being victims, but after data collection and assistance were carried out, the number rose to 32 pupils,” said Fony Ataul, secretary of the Antang Residents’ Shelter at the Makassar City DPPA, speaking to journalists.

Fony said the suspect committed his alleged acts while the pupils were buying snacks at his stall, located in front of the school.

“The children would usually buy snacks at the stall when arriving, going out to play, and after school. It was then that the victims are suspected to have been molested,” he explained.

The 60-year-old grandfather used various methods when the victims came to shop at his stall, Fony said.

“The methods varied — some were touched and groped. One of the victims had to undergo a forensic examination because she suffered a tear to her genital area,” he said.

The case is now being handled by the police, who have detained the suspect for further questioning.
