Police Detain 322 Suspected Rioters After Demonstration at DPR, 45 Named as Suspects
Police have detained hundreds of people in connection with disturbances that occurred after a demonstration outside the DPR/MPR building concluded yesterday. The hundreds of individuals remain under examination, and some have already been named as suspects.
“Based on the data collected, 322 people were detained for examination. By age group, 162 adults aged approximately 18 to 40 years are being handled by the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Directorate of General Criminal Investigation, while 160 children aged between 12 and 19 years are being handled by the Directorate of PPA and PPO of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police,” said Jakarta Metropolitan Police Head of Public Relations, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, during a press conference at his office in Jakarta on Friday (28/8/2026).
At the same location, Director of General Criminal Investigation of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, detailed the hundreds of people who have been detained. Among those detained, some have already been named as suspects.
“At this time, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police have conducted examinations of 315 people who were present during the riot on 27 August 2026 at one location in the area around the DPR RI building,” said Iman.
Police said the hundreds of people detained are suspected of causing riots and destruction after the demonstration in front of the DPR building ended on 27 August. Police have divided the hundreds of detainees into seven clusters.
“The first is the cluster of minors, namely those under 18 years of age. Investigators from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Directorate of General Criminal Investigation have handed over 153 minors to the Directorate of PPA-PPO for further investigation,” he said.
Three of the 153 detained children are female. He detailed that the 153 children consist of: 25 school dropouts, 2 children aged 12, 1 child aged 13, 3 children aged 14, 23 children aged 15, 47 children aged 16, 64 children aged 17, and 10 children aged 18.
The second cluster is that of ordinary rioters involved in a single riot incident. Investigators have examined 91 adults who carried out riot actions in front of the DPR RI building.
The third cluster consists of individuals who damaged public facilities and committed assault. Investigators examined 71 people suspected of damaging public facilities and committing assault following the 27 August action.
“From the results of the investigation, based on the evidence and witnesses examined during the investigation process, we have now named 45 people as suspects,” he said.
The fourth cluster is the group carrying sharp weapons. Of the 45 suspects for destruction and assault, 3 were found to be carrying sharp weapons.
“Three were found carrying sharp weapons during the riot, and of course the sharp weapons were also used to commit assault against people or property,” he said.
The fifth cluster is that of mobilisers and financiers. Iman said investigators have found legal facts indicating that there were parties who mobilised and provided financing for the riot.
The sixth cluster is that of mass recruiters. Iman said investigators have also found legal facts in the investigation regarding a cluster tasked with finding and recruiting masses to be used in the riot incident.
“The modus operandi carried out by those we have named as suspects includes damaging public facilities and committing assault against both people and property, committing violence against people or property in public, acting in groups and causing chaos, and misusing sharp weapons,” he said.
Investigators are currently also looking into parties who used, exploited or took advantage of children to carry out unlawful activities.
“This is because such actions could potentially violate norms as regulated in the child protection law regarding the involvement and exploitation of children,” said Iman.
