Police destroy porn VCDs

JAKARTA (JP): About 345,000 video compact discs (VCDs) containing pornographic material were destroyed at Penjaringan Police precinct, North Jakarta, yesterday.

The VCDs were seized during a raid on Duta Harapan Indah shop in Pluit March 13 this year.

North Jakarta Police chief Lt. Col. Rismawan and representatives from the local prosecutor's office attended the ceremony.

Rismawan said five boxes of the VCDs were stored to be used as evidence once the owner was arrested and taken to court.

"The suspect is still at large and we mean to keep the five boxes of VCDs believing that the culprit will be caught sooner or later," Rismawan was quoted by Antara as saying.

The police arrested several people in the raid but they were released because of a lack of evidence to support the allegation that they were involved in the trade of pornographic material.

Authorities fear the suspect has fled to another country, he said.

If found guilty, the suspect is liable to seven years in prison. (pan)
