Police Deploy Tight Security for Lunar New Year Worship in Bengkayang
Bengkayang (ANTARA) — Bengkayang Police in West Kalimantan deployed dozens of personnel to secure Lunar New Year 2577 Kongzili worship services at numerous temples and viharas across Bengkayang Regency on Tuesday (17 February).
Bengkayang Police Operations Supervisor Ade Iskandar said 87 joint personnel were deployed under Bengkayang Police Chief's order number Sprin/256/II/PAM.3.3./2026.
"Security has been deployed at 38 temple and vihara locations conducting Lunar New Year worship across six sub-districts, with an estimated 3,315 worshippers," said Ade Iskandar in Bengkayang on Tuesday.
Ade added that extra security was deployed at several priority locations in central Bengkayang town, including Ariamarama Vihara, which served as a major congregation point. Personnel were stationed from the morning to ensure worship proceedings were safe and solemn.
"Officers also conducted multi-layered security from the entrances of houses of worship, parking areas, through to the surrounding environs of the viharas," he said.
Coordination was also carried out with fire brigade officers and PLN (state electricity company) to anticipate potential disruptions during worship activities.
He said security operations prioritised a humanistic approach whilst remaining vigilant against potential threats to public order and security.
"The police are present to provide a sense of security to worshippers celebrating Lunar New Year. Security is conducted both overtly and covertly, with a focus on houses of worship and crowded areas," he said.
In addition to securing houses of worship, police personnel were also stationed at key traffic junctions in the town centre and areas of high activity. These measures were taken to anticipate congestion and maintain smooth traffic flow during the Lunar New Year celebrations.
Priority security was focused on 24 temple and vihara locations with approximately 2,674 worshippers spread across five sub-districts: Bengkayang, Sungai Raya, Sungai Raya Kepulauan, Teriak, and Sanggau Ledo.
He confirmed that all worship proceedings ran safely, orderly, and conducively through to completion. By midday, the security situation at all worship locations was reported to be under control with no public order disturbances.
"We urge the public to maintain tolerance, order, and environmental security throughout the Lunar New Year celebrations, and to immediately report to officers should they encounter any potential security threats in their vicinity," he said.
