Police deploy 5,955 personnel to secure Jakarta protests

Jakarta - Police have deployed 5,955 joint personnel from the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Central Jakarta Metro Resort Police, and subordinate sector police to secure protest actions in Jakarta on Monday.

Central Jakarta Metro Resort Police Public Relations Section Head, First Police Inspector Erlyn Sumantri, stated in a written release that the protests are being conducted by university students from various institutions on Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan, in front of the DPR/MPR RI building, and on Jalan Kwitang Raya.

He added that traffic diversions in the area will be situational, depending on the number of demonstrators on the ground.

Last week, student protests also took place at several locations, including Jalan M.H. Thamrin heading towards the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout.

The joint personnel consist of 3,651 members from the Indonesian National Police, supported by 500 personnel from the Indonesian National Armed Forces who have been placed on standby. In addition to deploying personnel, police have also mapped out a number of anticipatory measures to address the dynamic situation on the ground.

Police have appealed to all elements of society wishing to express their aspirations to comply with the established administrative procedures, so that activities can proceed safely without disrupting public order.
