Police deny involvement of specific groups in death of mirror trader
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Police have denied allegations of involvement by any specific group or community in the case of the mobbing or assault of a mirror trader, Bambang Setiyawan (59), who died during a riot in the Pejompongan area, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (27/8).
“We wish to clarify for everyone that, based on the results of the investigation and witness statements obtained during the investigative process, we have not yet found any indication that the perpetrators are members of a specific community or group,” said the Director of General Criminal Investigation of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Pol Iman Imanuddin, during a press conference at the Metro Jaya Regional Police Headquarters, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
This conclusion is based on the results of the investigation and statements from several witnesses examined by the police. Investigators are still working to uncover the true facts regarding the death of Bambante Setiyawan.
Therefore, Iman requested that information regarding the background of the perpetrators or alleged links to specific groups should not be concluded before there are accountable investigative results.
“We also invite everyone on social media to stop forming opinions so as not to cause confusion among the public,” he said.
He asked the public to trust the process of uncovering the case to the investigators. The police ensured that developments in the case would be communicated to the public based on the investigation results.
Polda Metro Jaya confirmed that the case of Bambang’s death will continue to be handled despite the family being in mourning. A Model A police report was created as a proactive step by the police to provide protection to the community and to uncover the events that occurred.
“We respect the grief experienced by the family, but the state must also be present in providing protection to every citizen,” said Iman.
Despite opposition from the family regarding an autopsy, he stated that a visum (medical examination) has been conducted. The family did not object to the visum being performed on the deceased.
“If the question is whether the visum was conducted despite the family’s refusal, certainly the visum has been performed. And the family did not object to the visum being carried out,” said Iman.
Regarding potential next legal steps, including exhumation and autopsy, Iman emphasised that every action by investigators will be carried out in accordance with applicable legal provisions.
Investigators from the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police have obtained two facial sketches of men suspected to be linked to the assault that resulted in death during the riot in the Pejompongan area.
The first sketch depicts a man estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old. The police described the man as having an oval face, thin eyebrows, thick lips, a short nose, black eyes, and brown skin.
Meanwhile, the second sketch depicts a man also estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old. His features include a square face, a flat nose, a thick lower lip, a moustache and beard, black eyes, and brown skin.
