Police: Deer that roamed onto road have returned to Kalibata Heroes Cemetery
Police have confirmed that deer spotted roaming on the road have been returned to the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery (TMP) in South Jakarta, an incident which had previously gone viral on Instagram. “The deer have been secured. The two that escaped, both have been secured. The one that ran onto the road has also been secured,” said Pancoran Police Chief Kompol Mansur when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday. Mansur stated that two deer belonging to the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery had escaped from their enclosure, with one of them entering the main road before eventually being safely recovered by officers. The two deer got out of their enclosure after the wooden gate suffered damage due to decay. “The chronology is that they got out of the enclosure because the door hinge, as the door was already rotten, they kicked at it and it eventually broke. Because it was made of wood, it broke, and they jumped out,” he said. Mansur explained that there are eight deer kept in the TMP Kalibata area and two of them managed to get out of the enclosure. “Eight in total. Two escaped,” he said. “There is supervision, but from a distance. And it’s impossible to watch them every moment because you assume they are safe inside the enclosure, but it turned out the door was rotten,” he added. Mansur confirmed that the incident did not cause any traffic accidents or casualties among road users. However, one of the deer suffered a minor leg injury, suspected to have been caused by hitting the wooden door of the enclosure while trying to escape. “The leg wound is an indication that because the fence was narrow, its leg hit the wooden door,” he said. A deer was seen running along a road in the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery area, South Jakarta, as recorded in an amateur video by a resident which subsequently circulated widely on social media. In the video, the deer appeared to be running among vehicles on a fairly busy road, attracting the attention of road users and local residents. The incident is known to have occurred on Tuesday (30/6). It was later discovered that the animal was one of the deer that had escaped from its enclosure at the TMP Kalibata.
