Police: Deadly Clash in Menteng Started with Motorcycle Revving

Police have explained that a deadly clash on Jalan Tambak, Menteng, Central Jakarta, began with a dispute over motorcycle engines being revved loudly. The incident started while the victims were having breakfast at a nasi uduk stall on Jalan Matraman Dalam.

Central Jakarta Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Reynold Hutagalung, stated that they received a report of the brawl at 10:00 AM local time. Residents in Matraman Dalam were disturbed by two motorcyclists who were repeatedly revving their engines near the nasi uduk stall. “There were two people on a motorcycle passing by the stall — as we know, it’s a nasi uduk stall — and the cart was affected and damaged because they were revving their motorbike,” Reynold said at the scene on Sunday (26/7/2026).

Reynold explained that the noise from the exhaust angered nearby residents, who then reprimanded the riders. However, the two riders did not accept the reprimand and instead called five of their friends to return to the location and cause a disturbance, even damaging several local micro-businesses (UMKM) and assaulting a resident.

The altercation then spilled over to Jalan Tambak, where a stone-throwing fight ensued. The clash resulted in two people having to be evacuated by police to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. “The two individuals have the initials K and DS. We also express our condolences, as according to the information we have, Mr. K, aged 23, has passed away,” he added.
