Police Coordinate with BPN and PPATK to Trace Assets of Bank Fraud Suspect
The Banyumas Resort Police are intensifying their handling of an alleged fraud and embezzlement case involving a former employee of Bank Mandiri Taspen Purwokerto branch by tracing assets and financial flows suspected to be linked to the crime. The move aims to secure assets for potential recovery of victims’ losses.
Banyumas Police Chief Petrus P Silalahi stated that his party had coordinated with the National Land Agency (BPN) to block the suspect’s immovable assets to prevent their transfer during the investigation. ‘We have coordinated with the National Land Agency (BPN) to block the immovable assets belonging to the suspect, identified by the initials N alias D, so they cannot be transferred,’ he said in Purwokerto on Monday.
Petrus mentioned that the assets being traced include land, buildings, and a café suspected to be owned by the suspect. To date, investigators have inventoried five immovable assets for the purposes of the investigation and asset security. In addition to tracing physical assets, investigators are also collaborating with the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (PPATK) to examine financial flows and accounts suspected to be related to the case.
‘The examination covers not only the suspect’s accounts but also those of family members and other parties who have connections or affiliations with the suspect,’ he explained. This step is taken to identify assets suspected to originate from criminal activities and to uncover the possible involvement of other parties.
As the case develops, the number of victims who have filed reports has reached 10 people. The majority of the complainants are customers who claim to have suffered losses due to the alleged fraudulent investment scheme perpetrated by the suspect. ‘There are currently 10 victims who have reported, and the majority are customers, not employees,’ said Petrus.
Investigators are also probing the use of several accounts belonging to other parties suspected of being used in a series of transactions related to the case. The examination is being conducted to ascertain whether the account holders knew of and consented to their use, or whether the accounts were used without their knowledge. ‘We are still investigating the context of the use of these accounts, whether there was indeed consent to commit a crime, or because they are colleagues of banking employees, it was logical for them to transact when there is business outside of their work,’ he stated.
The Banyumas Resort Police affirmed that the investigation will continue to be developed to uncover all involved parties and ensure that assets suspected to be linked to the crime remain secure until the legal process is completed. Previously, N alias D was named a suspect and has been detained since 7 June 2026. He is charged under Article 492 or Article 486 in conjunction with Article 127 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of four years’ imprisonment.
Separately, Bank Mandiri Taspen Corporate Secretary Tulus P Hutabarat said the company had imposed a sanction of dishonourable discharge on the employee suspected of perpetrating fraud under the guise of an investment that was not an official company product. ‘The company will be fully cooperative at every stage of the ongoing legal process as part of our commitment to good corporate governance,’ said Tulus.
The abuse of the trust relationship between bank employees and customers is suspected to be the main factor in the alleged fraud case involving a former employee of a bank in Purwokerto, Central Java. In addition to investigating the perpetrator, law enforcement officials are also urged to prioritise efforts to recover victims’ losses through asset tracing.
Legal expert from Jenderal Soedirman University, Hibnu Nugroho, stated that the relationship between bank employees and customers is fundamentally built on trust. Therefore, the abuse of this relationship not only harms the victims but also has the potential to erode public trust in the banking sector. ‘The relationship between bank employees and customers is fundamentally built on trust, so the abuse of this relationship can cause losses to the victims and simultaneously damage public trust in the banking sector,’ said Hibnu in Purwokerto on Wednesday.
According to him, the alleged actions of the suspect can be categorised as criminal fraud because they are suspected of using a series of falsehoods that led the victims to hand over their money or assets. Hibnu also assessed that investigators need to explore the possibility of other parties being involved in the case. ‘Whether he acted alone or colluded with others, that is the question. Usually, when a case like this occurs, the possibility of other parties’ involvement must also be examined,’ he concluded.
