Police continue to expand investigation into illegal prescription drug supply network in Tanah Abang
The Narcotics Unit of the Central Jakarta Metro Police is continuing to expand its investigation into the distribution of ‘List G’ prescription drugs in Tanah Abang to uncover the supply network operating behind retail sellers. AKBP Wisnu S. Kuncoro, Head of the Narcotics Unit of the Central Jakarta Metro Police, stated that personnel are deployed daily to several high-risk points in Tanah Abang, as the area has recorded the highest number of drug busts. “In July alone, we have been securing an average of two to three dealers every day. We are also continuing to develop the case to find the higher-level network,” Wisnu said during a press conference in Jakarta on Friday.
Wisnu noted that the methods used to distribute ‘List G’ drugs have become increasingly diverse, no longer limited to pharmacies or cosmetic shops. According to him, police previously uncovered the sale of ‘List G’ drugs disguised as ornamental fish aquarium shops in the Gambir area. The case was successfully resolved after the public provided accurate information to the police.
Wisnu stated that most perpetrators in Tanah Abang peddle ‘List G’ drugs openly on the roadside, making them frequent targets of routine police operations. Consequently, personnel are stationed daily at several vulnerable points in Tanah Abang. “We are placing our personnel in the Tanah Abang area every day, because we have been securing perpetrators there on a daily basis,” he added.
Based on data from the Central Jakarta Metro Police from January to July 2024, police have uncovered 68 cases involving 92 suspects and seized 118,494 tablets of dangerous drugs. Wisnu also urged the public not to hesitate in reporting suspected distribution of ‘List G’ drugs or any suspected involvement of officials in such practices. “We ensure that every report will be followed up. If any members are proven to be involved, they will certainly be processed in accordance with the regulations,” he said.
