Police Confirm 'Pocong Terror' Rumours in Kulon Progo as Hoax

In recent days, rumours of a fake ‘pocong terror’ have circulated on social media and WhatsApp groups in several areas of Kulon Progo. Police have confirmed the incident is false or a hoax.

The rumours described a pocong figure allegedly carrying sharp weapons and visiting residents’ homes, spreading among communities in Panjatan and Galur.

Iptu Subihan Afuan Ardhi, head of the criminal investigation unit at Kulon Progo Police, stated that authorities have not received any reports of pocong terror incidents.

“To date, Kulon Progo Police have not received any reports or found evidence of theft incidents using a pocong modus operandi in Galur or Panjatan,” Subihan said when questioned by reporters on Monday (25 May 2026).

He stressed that the circulating information has not been verified and is suspected to be a hoax spreading via social media.

“The information circulating has yet to be verified and is believed to be a hoax spreading among the public,” he added.

Police also confirmed that reports of a youth dressed as a pocong being arrested at TPR Glagah two weeks ago were false. Subihan assured that despite no formal reports, they continue monitoring the situation.

“Although there have been no official reports regarding the incident, we are still conducting investigations and monitoring circulating information to prevent public unrest,” he said.

He confirmed that the situation in Kulon Progo remains calm despite the pocong terror rumours.

“The area remains safe and under control, with patrols by the Kulon Progo Police and local stations intensified,” he added.

Police have urged the public to remain calm and verify the accuracy of circulating information.

“We urge the public to stay calm and vigilant, and not to readily believe false reports,” he concluded.
