A blast that occurred at a mosque in Patrang District, Jember Regency, East Java has begun yielding answers. Police have confirmed that there were no fatalities in the incident, which initially caused panic among residents.

The incident occurred on Monday evening, 16 March 2026 at approximately 20:00 West Indonesian Time and was met with a swift response by law enforcement. A combined team was deployed to secure the location and conduct an investigation.

“Officers immediately moved quickly to secure and manage the site,” said East Java Police Chief, Inspector General Nanang Avianto, on Tuesday, 17 March 2026.

The situation at the location is currently under control. Nevertheless, officers continue to conduct sterilisation operations in the area surrounding the mosque to ensure there are no further potential dangers.

Based on preliminary investigation results, police have confirmed there were no fatalities. However, the cause of the blast remains under investigation by the combined team.

“To date, there are no reports of fatalities. However, we continue to investigate the exact cause of the explosion,” he stated.

To solve the case, various units have been deployed, including an identification team, Forensic Laboratory (Labfor), bomb disposal team (Jibom), and investigators from the General Criminal Investigation Directorate.

“A number of steps have been taken by the police, including securing the incident location, conducting area sterilisation, processing the crime scene, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses at the location,” he said.

For their part, police have also engaged local environmental officials to maintain a conducive situation following the incident.

Nanang also cautioned the public against easily believing or spreading unverified information.

“We remind the public not to spread unverified information that could cause alarm,” he said.

Earlier reporting indicated that a mysterious explosion occurred at a mosque in the Pesona Regency residential area in Patrang District, Jember Regency, East Java during evening prayers on Monday night, 16 March 2026.

The explosion caused no fatalities but resulted in damage to the mosque’s roof and caused panic among worshippers and residents in the residential area.

“The blast was quite loud and could be heard in the neighbouring village,” said Mosque Administrator Muhammad Fadil on Tuesday morning.
