The Criminal Investigation Unit of the Banyuwangi Police has provided clarification regarding circulating information about the arrest of a cleric and Islamic boarding school caretaker in Sempu District on suspicion of sexual abuse. Police have stressed that the arrest was carried out entirely by investigators, not by the victim’s legal counsel, Yakuza Maneges.

Banyuwangi Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head, Commissioner Lanang Teguh Pambudi, stated that Yakuza Maneges’ role in the case was as a companion and legal representative for the victim. The authority to make an arrest rests with police investigators.

“Yakuza provided assistance to the victim and is also the victim’s legal counsel. The arrest was not conducted by the NGO,” Commissioner Lanang said, as quoted by detikJatim on Thursday (2/7/2026).

The handling of the case began with a report filed by the victim to the Banyuwangi Police. Investigators then coordinated and consolidated with the victim’s legal counsel before moving to the location.

“Based on the victim’s report, the Banyuwangi Police and the victim’s legal counsel first met to consolidate. After discussions by investigators with the victim’s side and once sufficient preliminary evidence was fulfilled, they proceeded to the location together, accompanied by the legal counsel,” he explained.

Lanang stated that all stages carried out by investigators are part of law enforcement procedures. These steps were taken to ensure that every action taken was based on sufficient preliminary evidence. The suspected perpetrator is currently undergoing intensive examination at the Banyuwangi Police Criminal Investigation Unit.
