Police Conduct Unannounced Inspections at Labuan Bajo Tourist Sites Following Austrian Tourists' Fatal Fall

Police conducted unannounced inspections at multiple tourist sites in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, to assess safety following the fatal fall of two Austrian tourists. The incident occurred on 24 May when Jurgen Perjul (55) and Astrid Perjul (57) died after falling from a decaying rope bridge at Cunca Wulang Waterfall in Mbeliling sub-district. On 29 May, Sano Nggoang Police Station inspected the Seribu Air Terjun (Thousand Waterfalls) site in Langgo village. Kapolsek Sano Nggoang, Ipda Risbel Pandiangan, stated the inspections were preventive measures to uphold public order and security at key tourist destinations. Officers checked treacherous trekking paths and tested the structural integrity of wooden stairs and bridges. Pandiangan stressed that safety and security are non-negotiable priorities in managing natural tourism sites, citing the need to learn from the previous tragedy. The inspection found facilities in good condition, with regular replacement of damaged wooden bridges. He urged routine maintenance rather than waiting for severe deterioration, highlighting early detection of infrastructure issues to achieve zero accidents. The previous day, Komodo Police Station, Boleng District Government, and Boleng TNI Post inspected Sano Limbung Natural Lake in Golo Lujang village. They discovered rotten wooden stairs, the sole access for visitors, leading to temporary closure until repairs are completed. Komodo Police Chief AKP Eka Darma Yuda confirmed the closure is temporary pending full facility repairs.
