Police conduct in-depth examination of two suspected blasphemy offenders

The North Jakarta Metropolitan Police are still conducting an in-depth examination of two individuals suspected of committing religious blasphemy during The Sound Project music festival in the Ancol area.

“We are still conducting a deeper examination of the woman with the initials R and the man with the initials E. Once a suspect determination has been made, it will be released again,” said Acting North Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Oki Waskito, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The two suspected perpetrators, who have been detained by officers, were seen in a video that circulated on social media.

“These two people are in the video and they were at the location,” he said.

The two detained perpetrators have been charged under Article 300 and/or Article 301 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, relating to criminal acts of hostility or religious hatred, and Article 301 concerning incitement or coercion to abandon religion.

Oki said that after the examination is carried out, it is possible that the case could extend to other parties. “So far, only two people have been detained and we are still conducting further investigation,” he said.

According to him, the two detained perpetrators are Jakarta residents, and after the investigation, officers immediately approached them. “Both of them are currently at the North Jakarta Metropolitan Police,” he said.
