Police Commissioner General Suyudi Rejects Justification for Extortion and Case Manipulation
Police Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto has stated his intention to instil a simple spirit within the Indonesian National Police (Polri). He expressed that this spirit is rooted in honesty, humility, and a commitment to not harming the public.
These remarks were made during a fit and proper test at Commission III of the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday (1/10/2026). He initially noted that reform within the police force cannot occur if leadership merely instructs subordinates to change.
“Change within Polri is impossible if leaders only ask members to change. Change must begin with the leadership and be proven in the field,” said Suyudi.
Suyudi mentioned that he intends to be active in the field, stating his desire to observe issues directly. “I will go into the field not to seek the spotlight, but to observe problems, listen to members and the public, make decisions, and ensure those decisions are implemented,” he said.
Suyudi further asserted that police officers must not be pressured to meet targets through illegal means. He emphasised that there is no justification for any form of misconduct.
“Members must not be forced to achieve targets in ways that violate the law. Conversely, no work pressure can serve as a justification for extortion, accepting bribes, manipulating cases, backing illegal activities, or using arbitrary violence,” he stated.
“The spirit I wish to revive is simple: do not be arrogant, do not lie, do not abuse authority, and do not arbitrarily harm the public,” he added.
He concluded by stating that he is prepared to be judged by his results rather than his promises. “If entrusted with this responsibility, I am ready to be judged by results, not by promises,” he said.
