Makassar, VIVA – An 18-year-old named Betrand Eka Prasetyo died after being shot with a police officer’s firearm during an arrest in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

The incident occurred after the victim was suspected of taking part in a brawl using toy guns that fire gel pellets. The Makassar City Police Chief, Police Commissioner Arya Perdana, confirmed the incident. The incident occurred on Sunday, 1 March 2026. He explained that it began around 07:00 WITA.

The Rapocini Police Sector then reported via a handheld radio (HT) that a group of youths were suspected of playing toy rifles on the street and causing public disturbance. According to reports, the youths blocked road users, and were even alleged to have shoved and kicked passing riders.

‘These actions were very disturbing to the community,’ he said, on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.

After receiving the report, Iptu N immediately went to the scene. On arrival at the scene of the incident (TKP), he found Betrand carrying out a hard approach against a motorcyclist. Iptu N then exited the vehicle and arrested the suspect, firing a warning shot in the process.

‘As soon as Iptu N got out of the car, he immediately made the arrest, holding the suspect while issuing a warning shot,’ he said.

However, the situation changed when the victim allegedly tried to flee and resisted. In that situation, the firearm still in Iptu N’s possession reportedly discharged and struck the back of the victim’s body.

‘While writhing, the pistol still in Iptu N’s grip reportedly discharged accidentally,’ he said.

The victim was briefly taken to Grestelina Hospital for initial treatment before being referred to Bhayangkara Makassar Hospital. However, life had already ebbed away by the time he arrived at the hospital.

Following the incident, authorities confirmed that Iptu N had been taken into custody and questioned.

‘The actions we took were to immediately secure Iptu N, conduct an examination on the same day and seize his weapon,’ he said.

In addition, the Criminal Investigation Unit and Propam immediately conducted a crime scene investigation and commenced a probe. Early information indicates the victim died from gunshot wounds resulting in severe bleeding. Nonetheless, technical confirmation awaits autopsy results.
