Police Comments on the Possibility of Peaceful Resolution in Minibus Driver's Car Window Smashing Case in East Jakarta
Police have explained the possibility of restorative justice (RJ) or a peaceful settlement in the case of car window damage by minibus drivers with initials IK (32) and P (32), who were driving against traffic in Kampung Rambutan, Ciracas, East Jakarta. Police stated they are prepared to facilitate a RJ resolution if the victim is willing.
“For now, we will carry out what is called restorative justice. The plan is, if possible, if the reporter or the victim does not wish to pursue the report,” said the Head of Criminal Investigation at Ciracas Police Sector, AKP Hotman, on Thursday (23/4/2026).
Hotman said that if the victim wants to continue processing the case through legal channels, the opportunity for restorative justice in this case will automatically be closed.
“But if he demands it, we have no choice but to process it according to the applicable law,” he explained.
Background of the Incident
This case began when the minibus driven by IK (32) and P (32) went the wrong way and cut across the direction in Kampung Rambutan, East Jakarta.
“The damage started from the minibus going the wrong way, wanting to cut the lane, which should have been a one-way roundabout 03 area from Rambutan towards Cipayung,” said Deputy Chief of Ciracas Police Sector, AKP Sriyanto.
The minibus then cut across from Pasar Rebo via a U-turn. That action obstructed the proper lane from the direction of Kampung Rambutan.
“The vehicle involved was heading from Rambutan to Pasar Rebo, which should have proceeded smoothly, resulting in a collision,” he said.
The perpetrators’ and victim’s vehicles then sideswiped each other. Both parties engaged in a chase before getting into a verbal altercation.
“Indeed, it was a violation of the lane by the T19 Depok-Kampung Rambutan (minibus) cutting the lane. Eventually, a chase occurred, and they ended up at one spot in front of Ciracas General Hospital on Jalan Tanah Merdeka,” he detailed.
A verbal argument ensued between the perpetrators and the victim. The enraged perpetrators then vandalised the victim’s car window.
“From the two people (minibus drivers), they got out; P got into a verbal spat, using inappropriate words or something. Then, the driver, IK, without further ado, punched or hit the glass of the L300 vehicle,” he added.
IK and P have now been named as suspects. Both are charged under Article 521 of the Criminal Code.
