Police Chief Warns of Potential Security Disruptions Due to Energy Crisis, Orders Brimob to Remain on High Alert
Jakarta, VIVA – Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has warned of the potential for security disruptions resulting from the war in the Middle East, which could lead to an energy crisis.
Sigit has ordered Brimob personnel to remain constantly alert regarding the impacts of the escalating global situation, particularly in West Asia.
He explained that the war in the Middle East has led to Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for attacks by Israel and the US. As a result, logistics transport ship activities have been reduced by up to 20 per cent in the Strait of Hormuz.
“We see that several countries, including in this region, have declared a national energy emergency status. In some areas of neighbouring countries, announcements have been made to use energy as efficiently as possible,” said Sigit during the Brimob Police Corps National Coordination Meeting on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.
One effort to achieve energy efficiency is implementing work-from-home (WFH) policies, including in Indonesia. Other measures include keeping prices of fuels such as petrol and LPG stable.
However, Sigit stated that the availability of energy commodities cannot be maintained indefinitely. This is because non-subsidised fuel prices have risen due to the situation. Therefore, it is not impossible that this energy crisis could cause public unrest.
“This will undoubtedly trigger reactions and potential escalations, particularly related to domestic security issues,” he added.
Accordingly, Sigit has asked his subordinates to prepare for potentials that could disrupt domestic security. In addition, he requested that all personnel continue to synergise with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) in facing these challenges.
“Therefore, we all must always be ready, always vigilant, and prepare ourselves to continue training to face all kinds of dynamics that may occur,” he said.
