Police Chief Urges Workers to Celebrate May Day Safely and Orderly
JAKARTA - Indonesian Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has urged all labour groups in Indonesia to celebrate International Labour Day, or May Day, on 1 May in a safe and orderly fashion. He deems this important for safeguarding national stability while creating a conducive investment climate. “Let us celebrate this birthday well, safely, and orderly. Let us show the world that Indonesian workers and entrepreneurs are united and ready to provide space for investments entering Indonesia,” said Sigit on Tuesday (14/4/2026). According to Sigit, the May Day commemoration is a crucial moment for workers to voice their aspirations. He stressed that the police will guarantee workers’ rights to express their opinions during the May Day events. In his view, harmonious industrial relations are key to attracting investment. He reminded that the current global situation is fraught with uncertainty, including the impact of conflicts in the Middle East region that could affect domestic conditions. “Therefore, we agree that Indonesia must be able to face such situations,” he asserted. “Nevertheless, of course, a conducive investment climate needs to be created. Therefore, we agreed earlier to encourage everyone to jointly ensure that entrepreneurs and workers can synergise,” he added. According to him, good dispute resolution will serve as proof that Indonesia can maintain stable industrial relations in the eyes of the world. “Let us show the world that Indonesia is capable of resolving industrial disputes well,” he stated.
