REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that the accident rate during the Eid al-Fitr homecoming and return traffic in 2026 decreased by up to 7.8 percent compared to 2025. He made this statement after monitoring the return traffic at Bakauheni Port, Lampung, on Saturday (28/3/2026) afternoon.

He said this decline occurred amid a 20.49 percent increase in the number of homecomers, reaching 2.9 million people from the previous year. “Of course, I also thank the public and all members who this year managed to keep the accident figures, especially regarding fatalities, reduced,” he told reporters.

Specifically, Sigit said the number of accident cases resulting in deaths also decreased by 112 cases, with a total of 265 fatalities. On that occasion, the Police Chief also urged the entire public to ensure their physical condition and vehicles during the second return wave.

He reminded the public who were tired from long journeys not to force themselves and to rest at the provided locations. “Especially those still undertaking quite long journeys, be really careful. Rest areas and buffer zones have been prepared by the government; utilise them well,” he said.

“So that when the condition recovers and is fit again, please continue the journey so that everyone can truly reach their destination safely,” he added.

Furthermore, Sigit said that by that morning, the number of vehicles that had returned to Jakarta reached 2.5 million vehicles. Thus, the number of homecomers who had not yet returned was only 13 percent or 385,000 vehicles left.

“This means that overall, we see that the peak of the return wave has passed, and only 13.07 percent remains to be handled. Hopefully, we can continue to maintain and manage this so that the homecoming and returning public can enjoy the journey and arrive home safely,” he said.

“Then, what we need to pay attention to is the Ketapang area, where there is likely to be an increase in return traffic because around 51 percent have not yet returned. And this is certainly our homework, our collective homework,” Sigit concluded.
