Police Chief: Residents flee as 5.4 magnitude earthquake strikes Sarmi

Jayapura (ANTARA) – The Chief of Police for Sarmi Regency, AKBP Ruben Palayukan, stated that residents briefly ran out of their homes or buildings when a 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck Sarmi Regency, Papua Province, on Tuesday. The earthquake, which occurred at 14:46:50 local time, initially caused panic among residents, who fled their homes. However, as of now, there have been no reports regarding the impact of the event. “Based on reports from our officers, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake, and we hope that the public will remain calm,” he said when contacted from Jayapura on Tuesday. According to data from the BMKG’s analysis, the earthquake has been updated with a magnitude of 5.4. The epicentre is located at coordinates 2.07° S; 138.94° E, or precisely 29 km southeast of Sarmi on land, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The earthquake was a shallow earthquake caused by activity on the Mamberamo Thrust Fault. The source mechanism analysis indicates that the earthquake had an upward movement mechanism (thrust fault). The earthquake was felt in Sarmi with an intensity of V MMI, in Jayapura City with an intensity of II-III MMI, and did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
