Police Chief Instructs Criminal Investigation Units to Enhance Services for Vulnerable Groups

Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has instructed all criminal investigation (Reskrim) units to enhance services to the public, particularly vulnerable groups. He conveyed this during the opening of the technical working meeting (rakernis) for reskrim at the Bareskrim Polri Hall in South Jakarta on Thursday (7/5). He also ordered every member in the regions to create a sense of security and deliver justice in enforcing the law for the public. “This demonstrates our commitment to jointly implementing law enforcement, which is a special focus of the government, and providing security and justice for the public,” Sigit stated. On that occasion, Sigit said the rakernis is also an effort to strengthen law enforcement amid increasingly complex crime challenges. According to him, strengthening human resources must be accompanied by increased collaboration and synergy among law enforcement apparatus so that law enforcement runs optimally in line with government policy. “This rakernis is part of Bareskrim and its units’ efforts to continuously enhance professionalism through strengthening the quality and capabilities of human resources,” he added. Sigit further noted that the current global situation is also creating new crime loopholes that must be anticipated together. On the other hand, the Police Chief also highlighted the development of transnational crime that continues to seek new modi operandi through digital technology advancements. “We are facing a global situation that also impacts the domestic situation, and of course, this creates new legal loopholes that we must anticipate together,” he explained. Finally, Sigit touched on the existence of the new Criminal Code (KUHP) and Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP), which he assessed require a paradigm shift in law enforcement, including the application of restorative justice. “The new KUHP and KUHAP paradigm certainly provides much room for restorative justice at all levels, not just attributive, and all of this certainly needs to be understood by all members,” he clarified. On the same occasion, Communications and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid, who also attended the rakernis, appreciated the Indonesian National Police’s steps in strengthening digital space security. According to her, cooperation between Komdigi and Polri is very helpful in facing various digital-based crimes. She stated that various forms of crime today increasingly exploit technology and digitalisation, thus requiring new breakthroughs in handling them. Going forward, Meutya said, the government hopes that inter-agency cooperation will be further strengthened, especially in addressing online gambling, digital scams, and crimes targeting children and vulnerable groups. “We hope for cooperation in programmes that are the attention of Mr President, including online gambling, scams, and other crimes, especially those targeting children and vulnerable groups,” she concluded.
