Police Chief in Lampung Hit by Car Driven by Drug Trafficker During Barricade Attempt
A police patrol car was struck by a vehicle suspected to belong to a drug trafficking network during an interception process in Way Kanan Regency, Lampung. As a result of the incident, the Baradatu Police Chief, AKP Sunaryo, was thrown approximately one metre.
The incident took place when personnel from the Way Kanan Police attempted to stop a black Daihatsu Terios suspected of being involved in narcotics distribution. In circulating video footage, the arrest attempt appeared dramatic as the suspect’s vehicle recklessly breached the police barricade.
Way Kanan Police Chief, AKBP Didik Kurnianto, stated that the interception was carried out after the Way Kanan Narcotics Unit requested assistance from the Baradatu Police Sub-district to stop a vehicle suspected of carrying drug suspects. “The patrol car was positioned across the Sumatra Highway, directly in front of the Baradatu Police Station. However, the vehicle continued to charge through and struck the rear of the patrol car,” Didik said during a press conference at the Way Kanan Police Headquarters on Sunday (6/6).
At the time of the incident, AKP Sunaryo was standing beside the patrol vehicle. The heavy impact pushed the police car, causing the Police Chief to be thrown about one metre. Although the suspect managed to flee, they abandoned the vehicle used in the incident. Police have since secured the Daihatsu Terios as evidence for further investigation.
Didik emphasised that the authorities will continue to take action against drug networks within the Way Kanan Police jurisdiction. “This is our commitment to anticipating the abuse and illegal trafficking of narcotics, while also following the directives of the Lampung Regional Police Chief to maintain a safe and conducive security situation,” he added. Didik further explained that the attempt to apprehend the owner of the Terios was a result of developments from the arrest of three other suspects previously taken into custody.
