Police Chief Furious Over Student Beaten to Death by Brimob Officer: 'A Stain on the Institution'
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo expressed fury upon learning that a Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officer, First Class Private MS, had fatally assaulted a student identified by the initials AT in Tual, Maluku. General Sigit said the incident had deeply tarnished the reputation of Brimob, an institution that should be protecting the public.
“Just as the victim’s family and the public feel, I am angry that this incident occurred. This clearly stains the honour of the Brimob institution, which should be protecting the community,” General Sigit told reporters on Monday (23/2/2026).
General Sigit conveyed his deepest condolences to the victim’s family and affirmed that he had ordered a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrator receives commensurate punishment.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the entire family of the victim and the community over this incident,” he said.
“I have ordered that the case be thoroughly investigated and that commensurate punishment is ensured for the perpetrator, upholding justice for the victim’s family,” he added.
Previously, the National Police had issued a public apology regarding the alleged assault by Brimob officer First Class Private MS against the student (AT), which resulted in the victim’s death in Tual, Maluku. The police expressed profound grief over the victim’s passing.
Head of the National Police Public Relations Division, Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir, stressed that the institution deeply regretted the incident and expressed heartfelt empathy to the victim’s family.
“The National Police extends its deepest condolences over the victim’s death and empathises with the victim’s extended family over this incident,” Isir said in a statement on Saturday (21/2).
He conveyed apologies to the victim’s family and the public. Isir emphasised that the violent act committed by the officer was an individual deviation and did not represent the National Police institution.
“The National Police apologises for the actions of this individual officer, which are not in line with the values of Tribrata and Catur Prasetya,” he said.
Isir said the National Police would ensure that the legal process against the Brimob officer would be conducted transparently. He guaranteed that action would be taken both through criminal proceedings and ethical review.
“The National Police is firmly committed to enforcing the law and the code of ethics against the individual personnel involved in a transparent and accountable manner,” he affirmed.
