Police Chief Confident Retirement Age Extension Will Not Hamper Force Regeneration
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo is confident that the change to the mandatory retirement age for police members in the new Police Law will not cause career bottlenecks. General Sigit assessed that the issue has been anticipated.
Speaking after the plenary session to ratify the Police Bill at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/6/2026), General Sigit said, “Regarding the retirement age limit, I think from a glance, though I have not read it yet, it has been regulated so that the issue of bottlenecks related to a position being stuck has all been addressed.”
General Sigit stated that his institution would follow up on the Police Law. He expressed hope that they could provide the best service to the public.
“Perhaps later it can be seen, because essentially we, the National Police, will certainly follow up on what is mandated by this law, so that we can provide the service expected by the public, to shape a police force posture that the public can truly rely on, and most importantly, how the Police can become more humanitarian, more professional, and more loved by the public in the future,” he said.
General Sigit said the Police would also continue to adapt to the times. In addition, the force will also continue to maintain stability.
“We continue to be able to adapt to future challenges and developments, which also give rise to problems that the Police must face, to maintain stability and create a security and public order situation that we must safeguard as initial capital, or a primary requirement for the realisation and progress of national development,” he explained.
Furthermore, the Chief of Police expressed his gratitude to all parties involved in the ratification of the Police Law. He noted that this change is the third amendment.
“This is the third amendment, which we believe is part of an effort to answer what the public’s hopes are, because there are many things we have absorbed,” he said.
“Likewise, when we were still in the Reform Commission team, we therefore also want the Police in the future to truly become an institution that can fulfil what the public expects,” he added.
The Chief of Police stated that his party provides ample space in law enforcement, even though this has also been regulated in the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).
“However, it is certainly strengthened again in that law by using information technology. So that later, from the initial process to the examination, everything also uses information technology, so that the supervision is much stronger, and we can hopefully respond to complaints from the public more quickly,” he said.
The Police Bill accommodates a number of matters, including the retirement age limit for police members.
In a meeting with House Commission III on Tuesday (9/6), Deputy Minister of Law Eddy stated that Article 30 paragraph 5 letter c reads, “Specifically for four-star high-ranking officers, the maximum retirement age is 60 years and can be extended by 1 year or according to needs determined by Presidential Decree.”
“So the addition is, ‘or according to needs determined by presidential decree’,” he continued.
In addition, there are other amendments, including in Article 2 concerning transitional provisions for the retirement age limit. The provisions for the retirement age limit when the Police Law comes into effect are as follows:
“a. The retirement age limit for members of the Indonesian National Police as referred to in article 30 paragraph 5, applies to members of the Indonesian National Police who are 56 years old at the time this Law comes into effect.
Members of the Indonesian National Police who are 57 years old at the time this Law comes into effect, their retirement age limit is extended until the member reaches the age of 59 years.
Members of the Indonesian National Police who will be 58 years old this year, can be extended until the member reaches the age of 59 years, as referred to in article 30 paragraph 7, effective from the date this Law is promulgated.”
