Police Chief Calls Attorney General 'Senior Mentor', Dismisses Rift Rumours

Amid intense scrutiny of the relationship between the Indonesian National Police (Polri) and the Attorney General’s Office (Kejagung) following a corruption and money laundering case involving former Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) Febrie Adriansyah, a different scene unfolded at the Attorney General’s Office on Monday, 13 July 2026. National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo arrived with key officials from the police headquarters to meet Attorney General ST Burhanuddin. The atmosphere, initially predicted to be tense, immediately turned warm at the start of the press conference. Smiling, Sigit opened his remarks with an unusual greeting. He referred to Burhanuddin as ‘kakak asuh’ (senior mentor), a term known in police tradition as a sign of respect for a senior who guides a member’s career. ‘My respected senior mentor, the Attorney General, Mr Sanitiar Burhanuddin, and the entire Adhyaksa family, as well as the Deputy Police Chief and all my colleagues, the key officials of the National Police Headquarters,’ Sigit said. Beyond showing familiarity, the Police Chief also clarified the assumptions developing regarding the relationship between Polri and the Attorney General’s Office. According to him, the two institutions continue to walk side by side and are committed to maintaining synergy in law enforcement. ‘We both agree and convey to all ranks that there are no problems between these two institutions,’ he stated. Sigit said communication between the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office would continue to be strengthened, not only at the central level but also down to the regions. He noted that the solidarity of the two institutions is crucial capital in overseeing various government programmes. ‘This is certainly our hope to become a beneficial programme for the community, to make Indonesia much better, and that requires stronger solidarity and synergy. But once again, there has never been a problem between the Prosecutor’s Office and the Police,’ he said. A similar tone was conveyed by Burhanuddin. He emphasised that the meeting with the Police Chief was neither an impromptu agenda nor a response to recent issues. ‘Alhamdulillah, I was visited by my friends from the police, and actually, this is not a new programme, this is an old programme,’ Burhanuddin said.
