Police Chief: Bomb Squad Still Declares Biak Bomb Blast Scene Unsafe

Jayapura (ANTARA) - Biak Numfor Police Chief AKBP Ari Trestiawan has stated that the bomb disposal team (Jibom) from the Papua Regional Police’s Brimob Gegana unit is still conducting sterilisation at the scene of the explosion of a World War II relic bomb in the fishing complex on Jalan Walter Monginsidi, Biak.

Sterilisation at the scene of the WWII bomb explosion is still being carried out by the bomb disposal team, considering that as of Wednesday (3/6), pieces or fragments of projectiles believed to be from the bomb whose contents had been removed were still being found.

“The contents of the bomb or the explosive materials are not present and are believed to have been removed,” said Biak Numfor Police Chief AKBP Ari Trestiawan to ANTARA on Thursday.

The search is currently being conducted outside the immediate scene up to the sea, given that the residential area is located on the coast.

Previously, AKBP Ari Trestiawan noted that the bomb disposal team had also found WWII-era grenades and ammunition, and all of that evidence has been destroyed.

“Hopefully, the sterilisation will be completed soon so that other teams can process the crime scene,” said AKBP Ari Trestiawan.

The incident involving the explosion of a WWII relic bomb, which occurred on Sunday (31/5) in Biak, resulted in six fatalities, three residents declared missing, and nine damaged houses.
