Police Can Fill Posts at BGN and Ministry of Agriculture, Chief of Police: To Support Food Self-Sufficiency

Deputy Minister of Law (Wamenkum) Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej, commonly known as Eddy Hiariej, has stated that police officers can now serve in the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) and the National Nutrition Agency (BGN). He explained that the provision regarding the assignment of National Police (Polri) members outside the police structure is one of the points regulated in the revision of the Polri Law. The man familiarly called Eddy added that this regulation refers to the functions and duties of the Police as stipulated in Article 30 paragraph (4) of the 1945 Constitution. “The next point is about the assignment of Polri outside its structure, which we will return to what is stated in the 1945 Constitution Article 30 Paragraph 4, that indeed the Polri has three duties,” Eddy said at the Indonesian House of Representatives on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. He explained that the constitution mandates three main duties for the Police, namely maintaining public security and order (harkamtibmas), providing protection and service to the public, and conducting law enforcement. “If in the Bill it is stated, giving an example, that is where the service function lies, because the function of the police applicable globally is to protect and to serve. So it falls under service,” he revealed. Based on these duties, Eddy continued, the Polri Bill details the fields where active Polri members may be placed. This placement is tailored to functions and needs related to police duties. “Well, then we detail the fields that, once again, can be occupied by Polri members,” he said. Meanwhile, Chief of Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo said the placement of Polri personnel in the Ministry of Agriculture and BGN is to support strategic programmes and policies for national interests, one of which is food self-sufficiency. “I think food self-sufficiency, especially in a situation like now, is certainly a concern of the President. How he wants to eliminate dependence on imports and how, in the future, Indonesia can be independent, then can realise what the people need to make the food self-sufficiency programme a success,” he stated. “And I think the President wants Polri to be involved in matters like that, related to strategic matters and for national interests,” he continued.
