Police Blockade Paralyzes Transjakarta Tosari Bus Stop

A police blockade of student protesters in the Dukuh Atas area of Central Jakarta has directly impacted public transport services. The Transjakarta Tosari bus stop on Jalan M.H. Thamrin was paralysed and ceased operations on Friday afternoon, 12 June 2026. The bus stop was closed at around 3 p.m. local time. “It has not been operating since around 3 p.m. WIB,” a Transjakarta officer at the location said. As of 6 p.m. WIB, the student crowd remained in the Dukuh Atas area. Police continued to block their movement, triggering traffic congestion on both sides of the closed road. The students, part of the ‘Menuju Indonesia Bangkrut’ (Towards Indonesia’s Bankruptcy) alliance, had originally planned to hold a demonstration at the Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout. However, authorities prohibited the protest from taking place at that location. The Head of Public Relations for Polda Metro Jaya, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, stated that the HI roundabout is a centre of public and economic activity and is therefore not permitted as a protest site. “The area around the HI roundabout is not a place to express aspirations,” Budi said in a written statement on Friday. Polda Metro Jaya requested the students to relocate the demonstration to other points, such as the Arjuna Wijaya Statue area or in front of the MPR/DPR/DPD complex. The ‘Menuju Indonesia Bangkrut’ protest was initiated by an alliance of Student Executive Bodies (BEM) from several universities, including the University of Indonesia, IPB University, Politeknik Negeri Jakarta, Universitas Pancasila, and Universitas Gunadarma, as well as student organisations such as the National Student Front and the Progressive Student Union (Semar UI). The students brought five demands. First, to stop the waste of the State Revenue and Expenditure Budget (APBN). Second, to lower the prices of staple goods and fuel oil (BBM). Third, to halt the free nutritious meal programme and the construction of the Merah Putih Village Cooperatives. Fourth, to end militaristic practices in the civilian sphere. Fifth, they urged President Prabowo Subianto to stop evading responsibility and to acknowledge the government’s mistakes.
