Jakarta, VIVA – Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has agreed on the Draft Law (RUU) to amend Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the National Police (Polri). The amendment provides the legal framework for extending the retirement age of four-star high-ranking officers (pati) based on a presidential decision.

This provision was agreed upon during a working meeting between Commission III and the government at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. Deputy Minister of Law, Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej, explained that there has been a change in the wording of Article 30, paragraph (5), point c, regarding the retirement age limit for four-star police generals.

“Article 30, paragraph (5), point c will now read: ‘Specifically for four-star high-ranking officers, the retirement age is a maximum of 60 years and may be extended by one year or as required, as determined by a presidential decree’,” said Edward.

According to Edward, the addition of the phrase regarding requirements determined via presidential decree was the result of discussions held by the drafting and synchronisation teams (timus-timsin) for the Police Bill on the night of Monday, 8 June 2026. He noted that this specific provision had not been included in the discussions during the working committee (Panja) meeting between the DPR and the government held earlier that afternoon.

“Therefore, the addition is ‘or as required, as determined by a presidential decree’,” Edward added.

The Chairman of Commission III, Habiburokhman, subsequently sought approval from meeting participants for the revised wording, which was met with unanimous agreement.

Previously, the Police Bill working committee had agreed on retirement age limits based on rank. For privates and non-commissioned officers, the retirement age is set at 59, while first officers, middle-ranking officers, and high-ranking officers have a retirement age limit of 60. These rules do not apply to police members holding specific functional positions, whose retirement age will follow the regulations governing functional officials. Furthermore, police members with special competencies or those deemed essential for policing duties may receive a service extension of up to two years, based on proposals from the Chief of National Police or considerations of necessity determined by presidential decree.
