An 18-year-old man, identified as G, suspected of murdering a two-year-old in Jatisampurna, Bekasi City, West Java, is alleged to have a mental disorder. Police await psychiatric examination results to determine next steps in the legal process.

“We have submitted a psychiatric examination request and are waiting for the results. We cannot conclude anything yet. Once the results are available, we will coordinate with the prosecutor before conducting another case review,” said Kompol Andi Muhammad Iqbal, head of the Criminal Investigation unit at Bekasi City Metro Police, on Saturday (30 May 2026).

Under Articles 38 and 39 of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUhp), individuals with mental disorders who commit crimes during acute episodes are not subject imprisonment. Judges may order placement in psychiatric hospitals or medical facilities for rehabilitation.

The suspect has been formally charged and faces up to 15 years in prison. “We have applied Article 80(3) of Law No. 35/2014 on Child Protection, in conjunction with Article 458 of the Indonesian Criminal Code under Law No. 1/2023. The maximum penalty is 15 years in prison or a Rp 13 billion fine,” Iqbal previously stated.

According to police, G admitted to being disturbed while playing games, leading him to stab his nephew. ” When questioned, G stated that he was playing games when the incident occurred. The child climbed onto his back, causing him to feel disturbed, leading to the stabbing,” Iqbal said on Friday (29 May).

He allegedly took two kitchen knives to stab the child and claimed to hear voices, which drove him to kill his nephew. ” In addition to being disturbed, the suspect claims he heard voices and wished to meet God, according to his statement,” Iqbal added.

Iqbal confirmed only the suspect and the victim were present at the time, along with the suspect’s grandmother or mother, who had stepped out. ” The grandmother usually works from 4pm to night. Upon returning that evening, she was shocked to find them covered in blood. She instinctively took the knife from the suspect,” he said.
