Police Arrest Two Suspects Targeting Student Motorcycles in South Tangerang

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Police have apprehended two suspects in motorcycle theft cases who frequently targeted motorcycles belonging to students parked without additional security in the South Tangerang (Tangsel) area.

Head of Ciputat Timur Police Kompol Bambang Askar Sodiq said in Jakarta on Wednesday that the two suspects arrested were identified as AM (32) and DS (27), both residents of Parung, Bogor, West Java.

“The two suspects were secured by the Operational Team of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Reskrim), led by Head of Reskrim AKP Akhmad Kholil Efendi, on Monday (13 July) at around 14:00 Western Indonesia Time,” Bambang said in his statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He explained that the arrest stemmed from a police investigation into a reported motorcycle theft filed under report number LP/B/823/VII/2026/SPKT/Sekciptim/Restangsel/PMJ dated 8 July 2026. The incident was reported to have occurred in front of Wisma Muslimah on Jalan Legoso Raya, Pisangan Subdistrict, Ciputat Timur.

After receiving the victim’s report, the Reskrim Operational Team analysed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage at the crime scene to track the suspects’ movements and identify them.

“On Monday (13 July), at around 12:00 Western Indonesia Time, the operational team conducting field surveillance came across two men riding a motorcycle with characteristics identical to those recorded on CCTV when the theft occurred,” Bambang said.

“When they were stopped and questioned at the scene, officers found a T-bar wrench key together with its socket in the front pocket of one of the riders,” Bambang added.

In addition to the T-bar key, police also secured a white Honda Scoopy motorcycle used by the suspects to carry out their criminal activities.

Based on preliminary examination results, Bambang revealed that the group deliberately targeted motorcycles belonging to students parked without additional security.

“Their main targets were motorcycles belonging to students who were careless about security, such as not fitting a secondary lock when parked,” Bambang said.

Both suspects, along with the evidence, are currently being held at the Ciputat Timur Police Station for further investigation and case development.

For their actions, the two suspects have been charged under Article 479 of Law Number 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code concerning aggravated theft, which carries a prison sentence of more than five years.
