Police Arrest Two Suspects Targeting Student Motorcycles in South Tangerang

The police have arrested two suspected motorcycle thieves who frequently targeted vehicles belonging to students parked without additional security in South Tangerang. Ciputat Timur Police Chief Commissioner Bambang Askar Sodiq stated in Jakarta on Wednesday that the two suspects, identified by the initials AM (32) and DS (27), are residents of Parung, Bogor, West Java. “The two suspects were apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Unit Opsnal Team under the leadership of Criminal Investigation Unit Head AKP Akhmad Kholil Efendi on Monday afternoon around 2 p.m. Western Indonesia Time,” Bambang said. He explained the arrest stemmed from a police investigation into a motorcycle theft report, numbered LP/B/823/VII/2026/SPKT/Sekciptim/Restangsel/PMJ, dated 8 July 2026. The incident was reported to have occurred in front of Wisma Muslimah on Jalan Legoso Raya, Pisangan Village, Ciputat Timur. After receiving the victim’s report, the Criminal Investigation Unit Opsnal Team analysed CCTV footage from the crime scene to track the perpetrators’ movements and identify them. “On Monday, around noon, the Opsnal team, while conducting field surveillance, encountered two men riding a motorcycle matching the characteristics of the one recorded on CCTV during the theft,” Bambang said. “When stopped and examined at the scene, officers found a T-shaped lock pick and its attachments in the front pocket of one of the riders.” In addition to the lock pick, police also seized a white Honda Scoopy motorcycle used by the suspects to carry out their crimes. Based on preliminary examination, Bambang revealed the group deliberately targeted motorcycles owned by students that were parked without additional security. “Their main targets were students’ motorcycles that were neglected in terms of security, such as not being fitted with double locks when parked,” Bambang said. Currently, both suspects and the evidence have been secured at the Ciputat Timur Police Headquarters for further investigation and case development. For their actions, the two suspects are charged under Article 479 of the Criminal Code concerning aggravated theft, which carries a maximum prison sentence of over five years.
