Police arrest student for armed robbery using toy pistol in Bekasi minimarket
The Sub-Directorate for Crimes and Violence (Jatanras) of the Greater Jakarta Metropolitan Police has arrested a university student, identified by the initials ARM (20), for committing a violent theft using a cigarette lighter resembling a pistol at a minimarket in the Jaka Setia area, South Bekasi, Bekasi City.
Head of Jatanras Sub-Directorate AKBP Abdul Rahim confirmed the arrest of the robbery suspect, who had been on the run since carrying out the crime on Thursday (18/6). "It is true, the operational team from the Jatanras Sub-Directorate of the Greater Jakarta Metropolitan Police has successfully apprehended the main perpetrator in the minimarket violent theft case in the Bekasi City area. The perpetrator is a student and acted as the sole executor," he said.
Meanwhile, Unit Head 2 of Jatanras PMJ AKP Reza Arif Hadafi explained that the arrest was made based on police report number LP/B/162/VI/2026/SPKT/South Bekasi Police Sector, issued shortly after the incident. Officers moved quickly to conduct field investigations and digital tracking. "Suspect ARM was finally apprehended without resistance by officers on Friday (19/6) at around 10.30 WIB at his hiding place in Kampung Cibeber, Simpangan Village, North Cikarang District, Bekasi Regency, West Java," said Reza.
He outlined the chronology of the crime, which occurred on Thursday morning at around 07.15 WIB. The perpetrator, acting alone and wearing a mask, cap, and hoodie, entered the Alfamart outlet on Jalan Surya Raya. "The perpetrator went straight to the cashier’s desk and pointed an object resembling a Pietro Beretta pistol from under his shirt at two employee witnesses on duty, identified as NA and TI. The perpetrator then herded the two victims to the second floor towards the safe room," Reza said.
The victims were then forced to open the safe and place Rp11.6 million in cash into a black plastic bag. The perpetrator subsequently locked the two employees inside the safe room from the outside. Based on CCTV footage, before fleeing, the perpetrator returned to the first floor to empty the cash register drawer of Rp500,000 and took 14 packs of cigarettes from the display shelf. The total loss suffered by the minimarket amounted to Rp12.1 million.
From suspect ARM, police seized evidence including the remaining stolen cash of Rp3.9 million, 14 packs of Marlboro Filter Black cigarettes, a cigarette lighter shaped like a pistol, as well as the clothing, cap, mask, and mobile phone used by the perpetrator during the crime. For his actions, the suspect is now detained at the Greater Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters and charged under Article 479 of the Criminal Code concerning violent theft, which carries a prison sentence of more than five years.
