Today we carried out the arrest of six suspects whose stories had also gone viral on social media. As we know, one of the incidents occurred in the Ciputat area, South Tangerang, where the victim was a child who was taking pictures or filming a bus, and then their mobile phone was taken by the perpetrators, said Director of Criminal Investigation, Metro Jaya Police, Kombes Iman Imanuddin, on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

He cited several pieces of evidence seized from the beggars, including a firearm used in carrying out their actions.

In addition to the Ciputat beggars in South Tangerang, Iman said the other five suspects were arrested for crimes in the Jakarta and Depok areas.

The police used firm and measured force, shooting the legs of suspects who resisted during arrest. Two suspects were subjected to such measures.

The six were then taken to the Metro Jaya Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation. Iman said the suspects face up to fifteen years’ imprisonment.

For the six suspects we arrested tonight, we charged them under Articles 477, 478, 479 of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP), and Article 306 of KUHP, with a maximum penalty of fifteen years’ imprisonment, he concluded.
