Police Arrest One Perpetrator of Private Land Burning in South Kalimantan

Police have detained one suspect believed to be responsible for burning land in Hulu Sungai Selatan, South Kalimantan. The perpetrator is said to have been acting on the instructions of another party.

“It is true that one person has been detained; he was clearing land by burning it in HSS,” said South Kalimantan Police Head of Public Relations, Senior Commissioner Nur Hamid, as quoted by detikKalimantan on Friday (21/8/2026).

Hamid stated that the perpetrator carried out the act alone on privately owned land in Simpur District, HSS Regency. The suspect intended to clear approximately 17 borongan of private land.

“One borongan measures 17 by 17 metres. The perpetrator has been detained at the HSS Police Station,” Hamid said.

The burning was carried out by the perpetrator on Thursday (20/8), and he was immediately detained by HSS Police personnel. Hamid explained that the perpetrator set the fire using a bamboo pole with its tip set alight, which was then used directly to ignite the land.

“So the tip of the bamboo pole was set on fire by him, and then it was directly used to burn the land,” he explained.
