Police arrest motorcycle thief in Central Jakarta who sold stolen goods on social media
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Police have arrested a 31-year-old man, identified by the initials MAR, for stealing a motorcycle and selling it through the social media platform Facebook.
Central Jakarta Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Reynold E.P. Hutagalung, stated that the suspect was apprehended at a shop in the Wanasari area of Cibitung, Bekasi Regency, West Java, on Tuesday evening at around 11.20 p.m. Western Indonesian Time.
“The case came to light following a report from a victim who lost his Honda Beat motorcycle in the Johar Baru area,” Reynold said in a statement in Jakarta on Thursday.
The theft occurred on Wednesday, 17 June, at around 5.30 a.m. on Jalan Kawi Kawi Bawah A, Johar Baru Village, Johar Baru District, Central Jakarta. The suspect, MAR, carried out the crime after finding the victim’s motorcycle key on the ground near the parking area.
“The perpetrator used the key he found to take the victim’s parked vehicle. Afterwards, the motorcycle was marketed through the social media platform Facebook,” Reynold explained.
Johar Baru Police Chief, Commissioner Saiful Anwar, added that after conducting digital tracking, the Criminal Investigation Unit team, led by First Inspector Boy Fernanda Malau, immediately moved to pursue the perpetrator to the Bekasi area.
Based on the investigation, the suspect admitted to selling the motorcycle to a receiver, identified by the initials DW, who has now been placed on the wanted list.
“The transaction was carried out using a cash on delivery (COD) system in the Cawang area of East Jakarta, for a price of Rp3.9 million,” Saiful said.
Police seized several items of evidence from the suspect, including an ignition key, the victim’s original vehicle registration document (STNK), an online motorcycle taxi driver’s jacket, and a mobile phone used by the perpetrator to conduct the transaction.
For his actions, MAR has been charged under Article 477 paragraph (1) letter c of the Criminal Code concerning aggravated theft.
The public is urged to be more vigilant when parking their vehicles and to immediately use the National Police’s emergency service number 110 if they encounter criminal activity in their neighbourhood.
