The East Jakarta Metropolitan Police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) has dismantled a motor vehicle theft gang that frequently operated in boarding-house areas. The arrests were carried out in the Cipinang Besar Utara area, Jatinegara, East Jakarta. The head of Satreskrim, Bayu Kurniawan, said the gang targeted vehicles parked at boarding houses. ‘The perpetrators stole two motor vehicles that were parked at the boarding house post,’ he said at a press conference at East Jakarta Metro Police on Friday, 22 May 2026. The case was uncovered following two police reports, LP Number 1724 at East Jakarta Metro Police and LP Number 52 at Jatinegara Police Sector. The thefts are believed to have occurred on Thursday (13 May) around 21:00 WIB at a boarding house on Jalan Bekasi Timur, Cipinang Besar Utara. Investigations involved intensive CCTV footage analysis and witness statements from the scene. From the scene investigation, officers identified two initial suspects with the initials MHB and MS. The chase extended into West Java. On 18 May 2026, police arrested MHB and MS in Tarumajaya, Bekasi Regency. On development from those two suspects, the Satreskrim team later arrested two more suspects, NMF and DKF, in Jatisampurna, Bekasi City. During the arrests, police recovered several items including two motorcycles used by the suspects, a set of lock-picking tools (kunci letter T) with its bits, and clothes worn by the perpetrators during the theft (captured on CCTV). For their actions, the four suspects are now in detention cells and charged under Article 477 of the Indonesian Penal Code. The gang faces a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment.
