Police arrest man with bomb at church

PEKANBARU, Riau: Police in Langgam, Pelalawan, in the province, are currently interrogating a man suspected of trying to bomb a Christian church in Pangkalan Kerinci, some 70 kilometers east of the city.

"The suspect is still undergoing an intensive investigation," the spokesman for the Provincial Police, Adj. Sr. Com. S. Pandiangan, said here on Monday.

He said the suspect identified only as Iq, was nabbed at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday near a church in which local Christians were celebrating Christmas.

The police found a bomb in his bag. The bomb was destroyed by the police later in an open field, causing a major explosion.

Several meters from the church the police also found a gun, ammunition and machetes.

According to Pandiangan, the suspect who is from East Java, has been in the subdistrict for six days. --Antara
