JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Police have arrested a man who allegedly extorted and stole an electronic money card, or e-money, from a van driver at the intersection of Jalan Jembatan Tiga Raya, Penjaringan, North Jakarta.

The head of the Penjaringan Police Criminal Investigation Unit, AKP Sampson Sosa Hutapea, said the suspect was arrested on Friday (15 May 2026) afternoon.

“He has been secured today. The suspect, with the initials B, was the one who ran in the recording,” Sampson said when confirmed by Kompas.com on Friday.

However, because he was being chased by the driver, the suspect eventually threw away the card.

“(The e-money card) was taken, and then, because he was being chased, he threw it away again. So, it is likely that the victim has it again. But, we still secured (the suspect),” Sampson said.

Furthermore, Sampson confirmed that only one person committed the extortion and took the electronic card.

Meanwhile, the other man who was with the suspect at the beginning of the video did not take the e-money card.

“In the video (there are two people), but only one person took (the e-money),” he said.

Regarding how many times the suspect had committed the crime, Sampson said that his team was still investigating and developing the case.

Previously, it was reported that the alleged extortion occurred at the intersection of Jalan Jembatan Tiga Raya, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, which leads to Jalan Pangeran Tubagus Angke, Tambora, West Jakarta, on Thursday (14 May 2026).

In a video uploaded to the Instagram account @warga.jakbar, a silver van is seen stopping at a red light and being approached by two men.

Both of them appeared to be making gestures with their hands as a signal to ask for money from the driver.

One of the men, who was wearing a jacket and hat, even appeared to put his head and hand through the open window of the car.

Shortly after, when the traffic light turned green, the man ran away to the back after allegedly taking the e-money card that was placed on the dashboard of the car.

The car that was left in the middle of the road when the light was green also caused traffic to be disrupted and the sound of horns from several vehicles behind it could be heard.
