Police arrest man for selling 82 rounds of ammunition to PNG citizen in Abepura

Jayapura (ANTARA) - Personnel from the Abepura Police have arrested a 42-year-old man, identified by the initials GSP alias Gio, who was allegedly attempting to sell 82 rounds of ammunition of various calibres to a Papua New Guinea (PNG) citizen. Jayapura City Police Chief, Senior Commissioner Fredrickus Maclarimboen, stated on Wednesday that the suspect was arrested on Monday evening after police received information about a planned ammunition transaction in the Abepura area. ‘GSP alias Gio was arrested while about to conduct a transaction with a Papua New Guinea citizen,’ he said, accompanied by Abepura Police Chief, Commissioner Paulus Hilapok. Based on the examination, the suspect admitted the transaction was cancelled because the type of ammunition he brought did not match the prospective buyer’s request. According to Fredrickus, the suspect obtained the ammunition from his father-in-law, a retired Indonesian Army (TNI AD) soldier residing in Sentani, Jayapura Regency. Police seized 82 rounds of ammunition consisting of 27 rounds of 5.56 mm calibre, 52 rounds of 9 mm calibre, and one round each of 7.62 mm calibre, 7.62 mm calibre coded AK-47, and 7.62 mm carbine. The suspect admitted that he had planned to sell all the ammunition for Rp5 million to meet his living expenses. For his actions, the suspect has been charged under Article 306 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.
