Police arrest man for drug

JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Police detectives arrested a 30- year-old man early on Thursday for possession of several grams of putauw (low-grade heroin), shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine) and a sedative pill.

Police identified the suspect as Ibrahim Salahuddin, the brother of noted actresses Ayu and Sarah Azhari.

Jakarta Police spokesman Supt. Muhammad Nur H. Usman said Ibrahim was arrested while in a taxi near his house on Jl. Batu Merah I in Pejaten Timur.

"Police seized 9.7 grams of shabu-shabu in nine packages, 4.8 grams of putauw in five packages, an Esilgan sedative pill, nine small rolls of aluminum foil and a package of small plastic bags," he said.

South Jakarta Police chief of detectives Sr. Insp. Achmad Alwi estimated the drugs had a street value of Rp 6 million.

"Right now, the suspect has been charged with possession of narcotics and psychotropic substances, in violation of Article 62 of the 1997 law on psychotropic substances.

"But we're still investigating to find out whether he can be charged with drug trafficking," Nur said.

The article carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail and a fine of Rp 100 million.

The drugs were found separately in the suspect's right pants pocket, in his left sock and in his house.

Alwi quoted the suspect, who refused to speak to the press, as saying he used the drugs to deal with stress.

Ibrahim only came under police supervision a month ago following a report from a colleague of the suspect that Ibrahim was selling drugs to those in the entertainment world. (asa)
