Police arrest man for defrauding victim of Rp160 million in Muara Angke, North Jakarta
The Sunda Kelapa Sector Police in North Jakarta have arrested a man with initials ARK (35) suspected of fraud involving the sale of a plot of land in Muara Angke PHPT Block G Number 24, Pluit Village, Penjaringan Subdistrict, North Jakarta, causing the victim a loss of Rp160 million.
“The suspect was arrested on Tuesday (7/2) around 1:00 PM WIB on the roadside in RT 10, RW 11 Muara Angke, Pluit, North Jakarta,” said the Criminal Investigation Unit Head of Sunda Kelapa Police Sector, IPTU Indra Basuki, in Jakarta on Thursday.
He stated that the suspect is charged under Article 486 and/or 492 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code regarding fraud and embezzlement, with a maximum prison threat of four years.
“The modus operandi used by the suspect was to offer and sell land and building objects that were not his own without the permission of the rightful owner,” he said.
He explained that the incident began on Saturday (24/1) when the suspect met the victim to offer a plot of land along with a building in the PHPT Muara Angke complex. Then, the victim and the suspect, accompanied by a witness, negotiated regarding the price and the document processing process.
They agreed on a price for the land and building of Rp260 million, and the payment method was made on Monday (26/1) at the victim’s residence. An amount of Rp160 million was transferred to the suspect’s account as an initial payment for the land purchase.
After receiving the payment, the suspect promised to immediately process the documents and hand them over to the victim. Then, after some time, the victim found it somewhat difficult to communicate with the suspect and the victim sought information regarding the object he purchased.
After that, the victim obtained information that the object he purchased already belonged to someone else, and the victim tried to contact the suspect to ask for an explanation about it but received no response.
The victim then reported the matter, and officers immediately conducted an investigation until finally arresting the suspect.
“We are still delving into this case and it is still in the investigation stage,” he said.
