Police arrest fourteen brawlers in Pesanggrahan
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Police have arrested 14 children involved in a brawl using sarongs on Jalan Kavling Cermai Raya, Petukangan Utara, Pesanggrahan, South Jakarta, on Friday evening (20 February) at around 8 pm. The Head of Public Relations at the South Jakarta Metropolitan Police, AKBP Murodih, said in a press conference at the Pesanggrahan Police Station in Jakarta on Wednesday that, in the incident, a group of children calling themselves ‘Pojok Tim’ challenged a group of children from Jalan Palem, who called themselves ‘Celebrities Petukangan’. “Both groups of children had agreed to engage in a brawl using sarongs,” he said. The brawl between the two groups of children occurred at 8 pm. The fight involved using bundles of sarong cloth, with the ends tied. A number of the children were engaged in the sarong fight until they were dispersed by local residents. “At the time of the incident, one person with the initials IFA was apprehended, and we then expanded the investigation and coordinated with local community leaders and parents, and we managed to apprehend 13 other people,” he said. During the investigation, the average age of the children was found to be still of school age, between 15 and 16 years old. They will then be returned to their parents for guidance and will also be part of the school’s responsibility. “We, from the Education Office, will provide guidance to the schools that this has not yet escalated into violence, so it can still be addressed. Unless, later, a child commits an act of violence, then we will have the threat of revoking their KJP [Jakarta Smart Card],” said Kosar. The DKI Jakarta Education Office will work with the police, with the parents in the area, and with the community leaders to guide the children so that this does not happen again. “If, later, a child is found to be doing something like this again, then there will be a threat because the child has made it a habit, and may have become a provocateur. We will consider this for further sanctions. But for now, in this case, they will still be guided, and the children will be returned to their parents,” he said. For the charges in this case, the perpetrators of the brawl can be charged under Article 472 of Law No. 1 of 2023, which states that anyone who intentionally participates in an attack or fight involving several people, in addition to their own responsibility for what they have done, will be subject to a maximum prison sentence of 2 years and 6 months and a fine of up to category three, which is IDR 50 million. In addition, the parents and children will provide or sign a statement not to commit or repeat the offence.
